Ah Shit, Here We Go Again Meme

A man in a white tank-top and jeans walking down the alley, readying himself for the usual hustle — If you are an active social media user, you must be familiar with this scene. We are talking about the famous meme template, “Ah shit, here we go again.”  This image macro is primarily used to express the feeling of encountering unpleasant yet inevitable situations, repeated confrontations, and getting into awkward scenarios knowingly.

This meme template is also used to drive other meanings and for creating comedic situations. Are you a “meme dealer” among your friends and want to know more about this template? Keep reading this piece because we will discuss this meme’s origin/history, its first appearance, and various uses.

This meme comes from the video game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. The legendary line “Ah shit, here we go again” is uttered by the game’s protagonist Carl Johnson after the opening cut scene. The game has the option to show subtitles for dialogues, and it played a significant role in making the static screenshot meme-able. The line describes Carl’s frustration with the neighborhood where he is done with harassment and exploitation of corrupt police officials.

Following is Carl’s complete dialogue.

“Ah shit, here we go again. Worst place in the world, Rolling Heights Ballas country. I ain’t represented Grove Street in 5 years, but the Ballas won’t give a shit.”

The First Appearance

It is interesting to note that this snippet from the game didn’t get any online traction in the first 11 years after its release. The first noticeable appearance of this screenshot came in early 2015 when a user posted this scene on YouTube. In September of the same year, a user on a GTA forum used this snippet as a reaction.

Despite breaking out on the scene in 2015, the meme remained obscure on the mainstream internet. People were still using it on forums, subreddits, and deep pits of 4Chan. The meme broke through to major meme platforms and social media sites in 2017. To keep it simple, we are going to share this timeline in an easy-to-understand bullet format.
